This article is in hopes to get the lunches at Bourbon County High School changed to more healthy and dietary friendly options. I’ve received several opinions from students, teachers, and cafeteria staff. I asked the following questions: how could school lunches be improved?, what do you think about school lunches?, and what are other schools doing? Personally, I believe lunches can improve by using less dairy. Other schools have healthier options. Most of our school lunches are terrible and almost inedible.
Senior, Madolynn Morgan stated, “the quality of the food could be improved and we could add more dietary options.” She went on to say “school lunches have a reputation for being inedible & gross and other schools have more options.”
When interviewing teacher Mrs. Conley, she stated “the lunches could be improved by getting student and staff input. Schools need more healthier options. In Scott County, they have more healthy options.” Mr. Kindred also agreed that Scott County’s food is better at providing healthier options.
With a different perspective, Ms. Daniel said “school food could be improved by adding a fast food option, but the school food we have in school now is better than what I had as a high schooler.”
Cafeteria workers, Toni Kraatz and Amy Fields, state lunches could be improved by adding healthier options. Moreover, many schools could have more healthier options because the food is all processed. Amy Fields specifically notes how we should have more fresh options for students, in comparison to pre-prepared meals.
Allie Watson, states “schools could improve on quality, seasoning, and diversity.” She also thinks school food is okay when she does eat it. Moreover, she comments that Sayre, a private school in Lexington, has really good food.
Just to clarify, I do not blame the cafeteria staff for the multitude of opinions that the food is terrible. I place blame on the federal and national government for putting many restrictions on school food to where we cannot have diversity in school lunches. What can we do to improve this situation? How can students allow their voices to be heard?
