Authorities are investigating a shooting that happened early Sunday during homecoming celebrations at Tuskegee University in the city of Tuskegee, Alabama. The shooting occured after they had won their football game on Saturday against Fairfield-based HBCU Miles College. One person is dead and 16 were left injured, according to the Alabama Law Enforcement Agency. All classes will be canceled throughout the week and grief counselors will be made available to students. A spokesperson for the University told Fox News that the shooting on campus resulted in the death of a non-university individual. Police said the shooting victim was an 18 year old man. An autopsy was planned at the forensic center in Montgomery, Alabama.
Tuskegee University was celebrating its 100th homecoming this weekend, when at approximately 1:40am, special agents received notification of multiple individuals shot on the campus located in Mason County. Just about 25 minutes later those individuals were transferred to area hospitals for treatment and one individual has been confirmed dead. The family of the person murdered said that the 18 year old died trying to save somebody else. Special agents are still in the process of gathering and examining information relative to the sequence of events which ultimately led to the shooting. Jaquez Myrick, 25, was arrested leaving the scene of the shooting with a handgun and a machine gun conversion device (automatic switch). When he was detained, the police confiscated a Glock loaded with a 30 round magazine containing only 9 rounds of ammunition in the pistol.
The university has increased security measures on campus to ensure the safety of students and staff in the wake of the incident. This shooting at Tuskegee University is a good example of gun violence in communities. To me, my biggest fear is being killed in a mass shooting because it could happen at any time, anywhere.
