April 5, 2019, marks the 25th anniversary of Nirvana’s end — the iconic ’90s grunge band, who produced hits such as “Come as You Are”, “Smells Like Teen Spirit”, and “Lithium” — came to a halt once news broke that Kurt Cobain, 27, who was the lead vocalist and songwriter for the band, had been found dead in his home. Cobain died of a self-inflicted gunshot wound in 1994 and was known to have struggled with depression, as well as a severe addiction to heroin. Cobain’s bandmates Krist Novoselic and Dave Grohl decided to end Nirvana; breaking off into their own music careers, however, never forgetting their roots. Grohl formed his own alternative rock group called the Foo Fighters; a few of his songs pay homage to the late Nirvana frontman. Novoselic was active in many musical groups and typically switched in between bands.

Today, Nirvana’s music still resonates with teenagers and young adults. Although some people may not know who the band is, or the legacy that it’s left behind, most are familiar with the band name, as well as the story of Cobain. Throughout Nirvana’s music career, they have come out with 25 albums; out of those 25, Nevermind continues to be the most popular and well-known by numerous people today. Twenty-five years later, people are being exposed to Nirvana’s music through the ’90s radio, through friends, and even through tee shirts and merchandise that continues to be sold at some stores.

Bands like Metallica, Gorillaz, and Daft Punk are seeming to make a comeback with a new album, or old hits being revived through the radio. Nirvana is no exception; their songs — old and new — are still going strong today. Many people believe that the band, as well as its members, will never fade into something of the past. As more and more generations have been exposed to Kurt Cobain and his music, people begin to listen to it; spreading its popularity, which is why no one seems to believe that Nirvana could ever be forgotten, even though it has been 25 years since they produced new songs.

As of October, Dave Grohl and Krist Novoselic have discussed the possibilities of another Nirvana reunion in the future; their latest being in 2018 with Joan Jett featured as their vocalist. This year Nirvana’s manager, Danny Goldberg, published a book that talked about the band’s successes, humorous moments during concerts and rehearsals, as well as provide more insight as to what Cobain and his bandmates were like as people. The book, “Serving the Servant: Remembering Kurt Cobain,” allowed the public to see into the life of Nirvana’s frontman; as well as detailing his struggles of trying to get clean, and the media’s many misconceptions of him, as well as his bandmates. Through the publication of Goldberg’s book and the possible future reunion, Nirvana is back in the media’s eye; allowing the band to once again rejuvenate itself, even after 25 years.
