Students nowadays are having a hard time focusing in school. Even me. As a student in Bourbon County High School.  I can say that students, peers, and teachers even have a hard time focusing. Social media makes everyone go wild. You get a notification and it’s like “oh I have to check and see who it is or what it is.”

I’ve interviewed two fine Bourbon County High School teachers about how high school students rely on social media. Ms. Daniel, an english teacher at Bourbon County High School has stated that “there is a lot of bullying online then there is in person, kids often get into more trouble these days”. She stated that “Snapchat texting, snapping, and videoing, has overcome Myspace, Facebook, Twitter, and Instagram.” It comes with instant gratification. Which means students have to check it as soon as they see a notification. It’s more difficult for students and teachers to focus when they are on their phones or have them sitting out on their desk Ms.Daniel had stated it as “instant gratification.” They have to check and see what their friends are doing. Maybe they can join them. They can also use social media to get test answers.

Mrs. Patrick was the second teacher I had interviewed. Mrs. Patrick is a health science teacher at Bourbon County High school. When I asked Mrs. Patrick “How has social media impacted generations now compared to when you were younger?” She had stated that she didn’t have social media until 2007 and she used Facebook on a computer. She also had stated in her interview that cell phones have really impacted people. She said “it has gone from a place of sharing pictures to a battle, to cause drama. She stated and I quote “I used to like it. Now it’s negative to me. “ She said that social media has made attention spans shorter. She makes students put their phones and earbuds in their backpacks and set them away from their desk against the wall. Social media is driven by the desire to check who texted you to see what’s going on when and where.

Furthermore, as a Bourbon County student, I can say that social media isn’t a good thing but isn’t bad. There’s pros and cons to every subject, with the first below stating that there were two negative effects that social media has affected high school students, “they were the only two that were consistently given by teenagers: distraction and cyber bullying.” Social media is a distraction; it takes away Homework time, chores, study time, and lack of sleep. That’s why the majority of students end up failing school.
