In less than six months, Seniors of 2023 will head to college. Most of them will be staying in dorms; students who are not planning on staying on campus might encounter a few problems down the road.

The price of rent has gone up compared to three years ago. According to the article “How much harder are Americans working to pay rent?”” According to Zillow, Americans have to work 63 hours a month to pay for rent. Three years ago, it took renters about 57 hours of work to pay for a month of rent.” This shows that people have to work harder to pay their rent. Not only do they work harder they also have to get more than one job to pay bills and get other things they need.  “Zillow reports that rent is around $2,040 a month.”  which is a lot for rent for people that do not earn that much money in a month. For someone to pay that price they would have to get a job that pays more than 22$ an hour just to make it through.

In “Nearly half of American workers don’t earn enough to afford a one-bedroom rental” it states, “Rents in the US continued to increase through the pandemic, and a worker now needs to earn about $20.40 an hour to afford a modest one-bedroom rental. The median wage in the US is about $21 an hour.” This shows that for people who are looking for more than a one-bedroom, they would have to work more to pay for their rent.

For college students to rent a place to live they would have to work way more hours to get the money to pay rent since the median wage is $21. For a full-time student it would be harder to get a job that will pay enough for rent. Along with class, it would be stressful to work a lot of hours. Now before you, upperclassmen decide that you don’t want to live on campus think it would be cheaper for you to stay on campus.
