Mikayla Nogueira is a beauty guru and a makeup artist who received backlash over her mascara. Nogueira hosted a 44 second TikTok video reviewing a mascara called the “Telescopic lift” by L’Oreal, and people were not happy. This all started when she took another creator’s video reviewing the same mascara and it gave her lashes amazing results, so she tried it for herself. It’s unclear whether or not this 44 second video reviewing a mascara was a paid post, but in the description of the video it says #LorealParisPartner. “Look at the length,” she says. She then turns to her side to the camera showing the arch of her lashes. “Do you see that? I am speechless. I don’t think anyone is ever going to be able to compete with this mascara.”

However, there was something suspicious in this video that wasn’t right. Fans and the beauty community have a lot to say about what this suspicious detail was. It appears that there were extra lashes added to her top eyelid and it caught the attention of her fans and the beauty community. The comment section was filled with viewers asking whether or not they were “extensions” or small “wispies” (individual lash extensions). Nogueira denied several times in the comment section about having fake lashes, however, her  comments were eventually deleted.Other comments were asking if Nogueira was paid for the post. This would require disclosure and an #ad according to the rules set by the Federal Trade Commission. The FTC Act prohibits unfair or deceptive advertising. This means that advertising must tell the truth and not mislead any consumers. A claim can be misleading if information is left out or if the claim implies something that is not true. This also means Nogueira can be fined if they find out she was not being truthful in a paid advertisement.

L’Oreal Paris was banned in the UK for misleading people about their new mascara. L’Oreal was banned in the UK for retouching photos, for exaggerating one of their products, and more.

Big creators had a lot to say about the mascara drama. Popular beauty influencer and Youtuber, Alissa Ashley posted a TikTok Wednesday saying “Stuff like this is why people do not trust influencers and it’s upsetting. When you have a big platform and you decide to use it to put a fabricated review up, that’s not okay.”

Jeffree Star is a longtime beauty influencer, a Youtuber, and got involved after hearing the news of the mascara drama and he was not pleased, so he tweeted on his Twitter that he was going to review the mascara for himself next week and give the people an honest review. Jeffree Star stated: “I used to be friends with all the influencers, right? Rest in peace, and, I would see them accept a hundred, two hundred fifty thousand dollars to say a product was good, and they would lie. I would see it, it would make me sick to my stomach and I am glad I don’t associate with those people anymore,” he says in the video.

Everybody is stitching Nogueira’s video, even big creators reviewing the same mascara and would add big fake falsies to clap back at her. O Videos included creators making fun of her accent, how she talks in her video, how she applies her makeup, even her weight.

One video is a girl who has a flash on and puts a ton of foundation and does a Boston accent “Go to Paht two” they continued by saying,“We going in with the Taht contour”. It can be argued that Nogueira has hidden her accent because she was likely bullied for it.

People were enraged over potentially being misled about the mascara and took it out on her. Nogueira does come back to TikTok posting again, but does she address the situation?

“I’m sure we all know why we’ve all gathered here today.” Nogueira says in the beginning of the video. Nope, instead she posted three videos of a beauty Valentine’s day makeup look. People are triggered by the fact she is not even going to address the situation.

As of today, Nogueira has not admitted to or denied any of these claims that were being made against her and I don’t think she will ever mention any of them. Since some time has passed, it’s easy to assume that she won’t mention it considering it is just mascara and nothing else, but mascara that people are creating problems from. Unfortunately, people made a big deal out of this situation, which I can understand because as someone who is a beauty guru and makeup artist and has so many followers and influence, you should be giving people honest reviews about a product and not exaggerating or lying about something just so you can get money out of it, but at the end of the day it is just mascara.
