Bryan Kohberger Might Face the Firing Squad
March 8, 2023
Bryan Kohberger, 28, stabbed Kaylee Goncalves, 21, Madison Mogen, 21, Ethan Chapin, 20, and Xana Kernodle, 20, to death in their beds on November 13, 2022, in their off-campus home. A new bill was introduced by Republican State Representative, Bruce Skaug. He wants to reinstate execution by firing squad in the state, a method that was legal from 1982 to 2009. Prosecutors have not yet shared if they are going to seek the death penalty, which would be by lethal injection under the current Idaho law. The Idaho department of Corrections would have to determine whether lethal injection is available five days after the death warrant is issued. If lethal injection is unavailable, a firing squad will be used in its place. Lethal injection is the maximum penalty in which case Bryan Kohberger pleads guilty or is found guilty of the murders. Bryan Kohberger is facing four counts of first-degree murder and one count of felony burglary. Skaug made a statement saying “the firing squad would be a more humane way of carrying out executions”. The chemicals used in lethal injections have proved to be difficult due to executioner incompetence or protocol failures. Utah had brought back its law for firing squads due to difficulty to get the materials necessary. In Idaho, the Department of Correction had to cancel executions due to not being able to get the materials needed to carry them out. Goncalves’ family has publicly called for Bryan Kohberger to get the death penalty. However, family attorney Shannon Grey stated “the decision would be made by all the families” on whether or not the death penalty is pursued. As of now, Bryan Kohberger is being held without bail at the Latah County Jail in Moscow, Idaho. Prosecutors are saying that he won’t be able to use the not guilty because of an insanity plea. Bryan has not entered a plea deal and is due back in court on June 26.
