Sororities and Fraternities in College
March 24, 2023
A fraternity or sorority is a brotherhood or sisterhood founded around shared interests and goals. Fraternities and sororities were founded to develop academic, community service, and social projects that are specific to each chapter. These men and women make a lifetime commitment to each other and also grow very close with one another when being involved in Greek Life. Sororities are self-sustaining friendship organizations made up of female college and university students in the United States and Canada. A fraternity is a group of men who form a brotherhood based on shared objectives and aspirations and make a lifetime commitment to one another. Being a member of a Fraternity or Sorority may be extremely helpful since it allows you to form bonds with your sisters or brothers who you’ll spend the rest of your life with.
When you think of a Sorority or Fraternity, you probably think of partying and having a good time, but community service is an important part of Greek life. Involvement in community service develops character by bringing to light the needs of others. Both individually and together, Greek groups are active in activities such as teaching children, organizing fund-raising events and contests, and undertaking community and a variety of other charitable initiatives. One Fraternity to be involved in community service is Sigma Alpha Mu. They supported The Judy Fund, an Alzheimer’s Association organization committed to generating funds for Alzheimer’s research. The chapter has raised over $800 and is excited to collaborate with the CU Against Alzheimer’s Club.
Joining a Sorority or Fraternity will allow you to make connections and enjoy positive experiences. Members of fraternities and sororities find value in their membership, which includes possibilities for leadership, philanthropy, and making connections. Fraternities and sororities are great groups to join to become involved whether you want to give back or meet new people.
