The New Barbie Movie Starring Margot Robbie
April 20, 2023
So we’re all familiar with the infamous Harley Quinn from David Ayer’s 2016 Suicide Squad, AKA Margot Robbie. Well, there’s been news of a new Barbie movie coming out and she stepped up to take on the role of Barbie herself. But what we’re all wondering is what the producer Greta Gerwig has in store for us. Warner Bros Pictures confirmed that the movie was set to hit theaters on July 21, 2023. The trailer was released Tuesday, April 4, giving us the first colorful look of the new Barbie-Land.
The movie stars Margot Robbie as Barbie and Ryan Gosling as Ken. The film centers on a doll living in ‘Barbie-Land’ who is expelled for not being perfect enough and sets off on an adventure in the real world and discovers along the way that perfection can only be found within. In an interview with vogues August 2021 issue, Margot admitted that creating a live-action Barbie film “comes with a lot of baggage” and, “a lot of nostalgic connections, but with that comes a lot of exciting ways to attack it. People generally hear ‘Barbie’ and think, ‘I know what that movie is going to be,’ and then they hear that Greta Gerwig is writing and directing it, and they’re like, ‘Oh, well, maybe I don’t.” The Barbie franchise has suffered loads of diversity between the images of their dolls and the so-called ‘message’ they give children. Barbie and everyone else in the film has their own background stories that give their character life. The whole point of the movie is to give a message to children about what true ‘perfection’ is and that the only way to achieve it is to accept the fact that you and everyone else around you have flaws, but that doesn’t make you less of a person than everyone, it makes you who you are.
