“Friendships bloom quickly, but could there be something more?”

The hit coming-of-age queer show, Heartstopper, is making its return to Netflix on August 3, 2023. Fans have been anticipating the announcement of season two for the past few weeks since it marked a year since season one was released. A couple of months ago, Netflix released a calendar of their biggest projects to be released in 2023. The media was alarmed to see Heartstopper listed in the month of October. Even though the creator, Alice Oseman, made no comments regarding that announcement, she teased something was coming soon. On April 22, 2023, netflixuk posted behind the scene videos from season one with the caption “One year ago, we said ‘hi’ to Heartstoper S1. What’s next? If you’re lucky you might find out this week… 🍂”

Two days later, a video was released containing the information for season two and what fans can expect. Season two began production on September 23, 2022, and revealed the new characters fans can expect to see, along with returning cast members. Filming didn’t take long though. Oseman announced on December 2, 2022, that the cast had wrapped and she can’t wait to get started on post-production. Although a trailer hasn’t been released just yet, the announcement video showcased various behind the scenes clips from the upcoming season. Corinna Brown, the actress who plays Darcy explained how she thinks there is more going on this season. A controversial character that fans had mixed reviews on is Imogen and Rhea Norwood explained that this season will open up her character’s story a bit more and she will put herself above boys. Yasmin Finney, who plays Elle, explained that her character will be more confident and she will surround herself with people who elevate her this season. Kit Connor, who plays Nick Nelson mentioned that showrunner, Alice Oseman wrote amazing scripts for them this season and how they feel “fresher” and “cooler.” Finally, Joe Locke, who plays main character Charlie Spring stated that his character goes on a more mature/darker journey this season. This is a reference to Charlie’s mental health struggles in the third and fourth volume.

This season is based on volumes three and four of the graphic novels. The majority of the season will follow exactly the same story line but there will be an introduction to new characters. Fans are excited to see the graphic novel brought to screen and how they will approach the following seasons.
