On Wednesday the ruling party in Mexico was in favor of former mayor of Mexico City Claudia Sheinbaum for the Presidential race next year, a move that was expected by a mass amount of people. This puts the country on track to elect its first female president. The nomination on Wednesday was overshadowed because of a blow-up in the ruling party: Morena. Marcelo Ebrard, the chief competitor for Sheinbaum stated “faults” before final results were announced in the primary process. This led Ebrard to publicly call for a rerun in the internal polling concluding in Sheibaum’s victory. This is a conclusion that has come from polls of Morena party members which means that Claudia Sheinbaum will most likely be running as this party’s candidate in the election coming up in June. Alfonso Durazo, the president of Morena’s National Council stated that Sheinbaum has former Foreign Affairs Secretary Marcelo Ebrard beat by double figures in five party surveys. Being that Sheinbaum is Morena’s Candidate this means she does have a distinct advantage over the other candidates, this being she is a close ally of popular Andrés Manuel López Obrador. Both women have insisted that Mexico is ready to be directed by a woman although it will not be an easy change. Two examples set by statistics and data have shown that in the last elections in the state of Mexico, the most populated region, two women also faced each other and the participation in the election was the lowest in Mexican history. The same thing also happened to take place but this time in Aguascalientes (another region) where again two women ran and the election yielded the least amount of participation. What we can state from this information is that the reality in this situation is that most of the citizens are not voting. Another thing to add is that women themselves aren’t voting for women for some reason. The opposition with the most relevance is also a woman named Xóchitl Gálvez, She is a sitting senator in the Mexican Congress and she is set to face off in the upcoming elections.
