On Sunday, October 17th, Bourbon County Police were attempting to pull over Dante Ybarbo, age 24, for speeding and not having his lights on. When police officers stopped Dante, there were signs that he was drunk, such as a strong odor of alcohol coming from the vehicle, his eyes were blurred, and police noted a case of beer in the vehicle. Consequently, police officers proceeded to tell Dante to get out of the car, but he drove away, starting a high-speed chase through Bourbon County. When officers attempted to travel after him, the driver started firing at police and hit two officers. Two other officers shot at the car and shot him. Dante was taken to the University of Kentucky Hospital to be treated. Now, he is at the Bourbon County Detention Center.
Police finally caught him in North Middletown after an officer stood in the direction where the car was going. Dante Ybarbo was attempting to go through the cars and was planning on driving straight to the officer when the officer shot him through the windshield and Dante slumped down. When police put him in handcuffs to arrest him, while also getting him medical attention, he kept repeating “Suicide by a cop”, according to the arrest citation. The officer asked Dante why he kept repeating that. He explained that he wanted to “join his brother who was deceased”, but then stated that “the mission failed”. They weren’t able to do a sobriety test on him due to f his injuries, and they said they would subpoena, or order him to attend court, to receive his blood results from the UK hospital. Dante is facing multiple charges: first-degree wanton endangerment of a police officer, resisting arrest, first-degree assault of a police officer, first-degree evading and fleeing police in a motor vehicle, reckless driving, first-degree operating a motor vehicle under the influence, and first-degree criminal mischief. This is a developing case that is continuing to obtain new information on the situation
