October 30, 2023 is the most unique day in the sporting calendar this year. On Monday every major sport in the United States played for the only time this year. That only happens in a great while. NBA, NFL, and MBL will come together for an equinox. 22 games happened on Monday. October is usually the perfect season for sports to happen. The sports equinox occurs when the NBA, NFL, MLB, and NHL occur when games play all at the same time. The celebration occurs around the “ Big Four” leagues. According to CNBC iger and the president of ESPN, Jimmy Pitaro had spoken with the National Football League (NFL), the National Basketball Association (NBA), and the Major Basketball League (MBL) regarding a potential tie-up. The first equinox occurred on October 17, 1971, with a World Series Game 7, 12 NFL games, three NBA games, and 6 NHL games. According to Max Molski nine sports equinoxes occurred between 1971 and 1980.
Another fell in 1985 16 years before another one had happened. 26 of 29 sports equinoxes in history occur between Oct. 12 and Nov. 4 in its given year. However in recent years, the sports equinox has become more common. At least one has happened every year since 2015 according to Kaycee Sloan. The last sports equinox nearly happened a year ago on Oct. 31, 2022. As there were three last year. Los Angeles hosted five major U.S. sporting events during October of 2018. That day was doubled as the “Super Sports Equinox.” There is a small window where an equinox can occur. The only sports equinox that fell outside of that window occurred in 2020, due to Covid-19. The NHL and the NBA seasons typically start around mid-to-late October, right as the MLB postseason is coming to an end.
