At the heart of every sport is rivalry. They fuel the hearts of not only the fans of the game but the players as well. Rivalry games commonly end out in over-the-top shootouts with both teams giving it their all. One of these rivalries is the University of Kentucky vs the University of Louisville, the two teams have been at each other’s throats for over one hundred years, with the first-ever game taking place all the way back in 1912 with Kentucky winning in a blowout 41-0.
In the most recent meetup, the Cats went into the hostile L&N Federal Credit Union Stadium to take on the number nine-ranked Cardinals. After a constant back and forth between the two teams, and with the help of a ninety-nine-yard kick return from Kentucky’s Barion Brown, and a great defensive stop on fourth down, Kentucky pulled ahead and won 38-31 extending their winning streak to five in a row.
The two have been rivals for one hundred and eleven years, yet have only faced each other thirty-five times with Kentucky leading the overall series twenty wins to Louisville’s fifteen. Yet since the series restarted in 1994 Louisville has won fifteen and Kentucky’s only won fourteen, so the two teams have been neck and neck for many years at this point, with both teams producing elite-level NFL talent including the Baltimore Ravens Lamar Jackson and the Jacksonville Jaguars’ Josh Allen.
Rather you are a supporter of the Big Blue or the Cards every year every year we are treated to a great game between Kentucky’s two premier college football teams. With a good outlook for both teams, it doesn’t seem that the two show any sign of slowing down, now it’s time to sit back and watch and prepare for the two teams’ next meeting at the 2024 Governors Cup.
