The majority of our world is afraid of sharks. Sharks are a part of our ecosystem, and killing them disrupts the delicate balance of the ocean. Nonetheless, sharks do attack. A 10-year-old was recently airlifted to U.S. territories after a shark attack. The boy was bitten at the Atlantis Paradise Island Resort, in the Bahamas. He was treated at a local hospital, said the Royal Bahama Police In a previous news release. The boy was bitten while participating in an expedition in a shark tank at the local resort. The dive instructor guide was in the water at the time of the incident, and they quickly responded to provide medical attention before he received more medical attention at the local hospital. It wasn’t clear if the boy’s family was with him when the shark attack happened. According to Stuart Cloves, this was the first “guest-related incident” since it became a shark diving program in 2006. The experiment will remain closed due to further investigation. But this wasn’t the only shark attack that had happened in the Bahamas. Back in December, a woman named Lauren Erickson was killed in a shark attack when she was 44 years old. Lauren was paddle boarding with a family member when the shark attacked her, according to CBS News. Even though shark attacks are rare. Incidents are very unlikely to happen. The Florida Museum of Natural History’s International Shark File investigated the number of 108 alleged shark-human attacks in 2022. It was confirmed that there were 57 unprovoked bites and 32 provoked bites. Five of those cases wouldn’t be confirmed. According to Lauren Gaches, it is extremely unlikely that swimmers and surfers are bitten or even encounter sharks. Only about a dozen of more than 300 species of sharks have been involved in attacks on humans. Sharks are opportunistic feeders however, and they mainly feed on fish and invertebrates. Sharks have been known to attack humans when they are curious or confused. They generally should not be considered that great of a threat. However, as the recent attacks have made a great impact on the resort, the resort is now closed.
