What is Apple’s new “Spatial Computer” and why is everyone going crazy about it? By now you might have heard something about Apple’s latest device the Apple Vision Pro, which they call a “Spatial Computer” but why insist on calling it that, what separates their headgear from other similar devices such as the Meta Quest 3? For those who haven’t heard of or seen the device to understand its use and capabilities, we must understand “what spatial computing” is. We can think of “Spatial Computing” as an umbrella term. This term refers to the ability to merge the virtual world with the physical world seamlessly. Apple says this is done by using a three-dimensional interface that makes users feel like the digital content they’re viewing is in the actual physical world, the device can be used to display many forms of media such as movies, social media feed, and much more this is a lot more interesting and more immersive than using a phone or a tablet. Now the reason they insist on calling it spatial computing is due to the differences between their device and others such as the meta quest 3. The Meta Quest 3 is described as a virtual reality headset, and although it has some similarities it fails to execute the same merging the Apple Vision Pro does, another difference between the two is the virtual reality aspect although virtual reality falls under the spatial computing umbrella, the two terms refer to different user experiences. With virtual reality, you’re fully immersed in a digitally simulated, 3D world that’s also interactive. It replaces the physical reality around you, and you interact with it; this is the main difference between the two. Augmented reality also has similarities and differences Augmented reality overlays digital content onto the real world this is typically done by using your phone’s camera. The Apple Vision Pro uses aspects of both augmented reality and virtual reality thanks to this it allows the user to use their eyes and fingers to interact with and control apps essentially being a mixture of the two. For what it does I believe the price tag is definitely reasonable.
