Two individuals were charged with murder after the Kansas City Chiefs shooting on Wednesday 21, 2024. After the Kansas City Super Bowl parade, two adult males opened fire, killing one and injuring 22 others. Lyndell Mays, of Raytown, Missouri, and Dominic Miller, of Kansas City, Missouri, are both charged with second-degree murder, two counts of armed criminal action, and unlawful use of a weapon. The accident first started when the two men began arguing over people staring at each other. According to police information, surveillance videos show that Lyndell Mays, along with an apprentice, aggressively approached the other group to confront them. Lyndell Mays started to shoot at the group despite being surrounded by thousands of people, including children and adults. In an interview, Lyndell Mays stated “he hesitated shooting because he knew there were kids there.” Lyndell told officers he began firing after someone in the other group yelled “I’m going to get you”, which he took as a threat to his life. Lyndell stated he shot randomly at the other group because someone started running away. The guy running away was the other gunman, Dominic Miller. Dominic told investigators “He and his friends began running after hearing gunfire and that he was shot in the back.” Officers told Dominic Miller they had surveillance video of him chasing someone in Lyndell’s group and firing shots. Dominic admitted to officials that he fired four to five shots.
One out of the five shots is the bullet that killed Lisa Lopez-Galvan, 43. Lisa was in a nearby crowd of people watching the Chiefs rally. Lisa Lopez-Galvan was a DJ, “She brought Kansas City a burst of culture through Tejano songs,” said somebody close to her. Liza was celebrating her team’s historic repeat championship win with nearly 1 million people, including her husband, son, and daughter, in downtown Kansas City when she was fatally shot. Half of the victims were under the age of 16. The youngest victim was just eight and the oldest was 47. Children’s Mercy Kansas City Hospital treated 11 children on the night of the shooting. All of the children who suffered gunshot wounds have since been discharged from the hospital. Kansas City Fire Chief Ross Grundyson provided updates on the severity of injuries at a press conference: “Eight critical, seven serious, and six patients with minor injuries. All the critical patients were transported off the scene within 10 minutes of our point of contact with them.” The shooter’s court date was set for Wednesday 14, 2024, they were charged with second-degree murder, two counts of armed criminal action, and unlawful use of a weapon.
