Sony’s biggest flop. Some are even calling it worse than the tragedy that was “Morbius”. Sony’s “Madame Web” was an absolute tragedy and most knew this the moment the trailer dropped. Memes were instantly made from just one string of words baffling those who watched the trailer “He was in the Amazon with my mom when she was researching spiders right before she died,” a multitude of memes came from this line alone. Since its Valentine’s Day release the film has only earned around $25.8 million domestically. Putting the film’s opening weekend well below that of Sony’s “Morbius,” another tragic disaster loathed by many superhero film fans, compared to the other failure “Morbius” earned $39 million in its opening weekend. The film follows a young paramedic Cassandra “Cassie” Webb played by Dakota Johnson discovering clairvoyant powers which were given to her genetically after her mother was bitten by a spider. In the beginning, she is hesitant to become a superhero, although this changes when she is forced to protect three young women from a mysterious villain (who looks like a Bad Spider-Man). The film was quickly criticized for its sloppy editing, clunky plot, and sluggish action sequences; this resulted in a very low 13 percent critics’ score on Rotten Tomatoes as of Monday morning. Another possible reason for its big failure could be due to its lack of tie-ins to the other “Spider-Man” films and projects Despite including characters such as Spider-Woman and Madame Web herself, who made her debut in “The Amazing Spider-Man” comics. There was a promotional poster with a line from the movie “Her Web Connects Them All” This led to speculations and even suggested there would be some hints or links to the amazing web-slinger himself although despite all of the speculations and suggestions there were only slight nods to spider-powered heroes and Peter Parker’s family.
