On the first Monday of may, the annual Met Gala occurred. We got to see many of our favorite celebrities dressed to the T in beautiful ambitious pieces. However, do we even know what the Met Gala is? I’m sure we all see the photos and videos of thousands of celebrities walking the red carpet in unique attire. But do we really know what the event even is?
The Met Gala began in 1948 and has since been hosted on the first Monday of may. The event began as a fundraiser for the institute, The metropolitan museum of art’s. For the first Met Gala the tickets were only $50 and instead of walking the carpet at the museum they insisted on doing it in New York’s famous locations like the Waldorf Astoria and central park. They continued this for 20 years until they switched to having the red carpet in the museum’s stairs and having the party in the Temple of Dendur. The first Met Gala was created by a fashion publicist, Eleanor Lambert. Not only did she create that but she also helped launch New York fashion week.
Themes are very important in the Met Gala because it not only reflects what the people will be wearing but it is also related to the annual art exhibit. The themes began in the 1970’s with the first theme being in 1973 “The World of Balenciaga”. The first theme exhibit was created by Diana Vreeland, when she wanted to bring vibrant color, history and new style. Which was all that Cristobal Balenciaga gave to the fashion world, leaving many inspiration.
The Met Gala is such an iconic annual event because it not only shows the trends of the past but also the new and upcoming trends of the future. Throughout the years we get to look back and see celebrities and fashion because of the Met Gala. I think it is a wonderful and unique event that should continue throughout the years.
