Since its announcement in February 2024, Beetlejuice Beetlejuice, the sequel to the 1988 cult classic, has been expected to become another cult classic directed by Tim Burton. In an article written by Nicholas Barber at BBC, it states that “The sequel will far surpass the original in almost every respect.” In this article, it says that not many sequels of 1980s classics “surpass their predecessor in almost every respect” however, Beetlejuice Beetlejuice is the exception. Nicholas Barber at BBC writes the sequel, relies on “practical effects such as puppets, prosthetics, and bucket loads of goo” and he says that this “makes the jokes in the sequel both funnier and more disgusting.” In another article written by Owen Gleiberman in Variety Magazine, he writes a review of the movie. In this review, he talks about the overall feeling of the cult classic. He says the following. “Back in 1988, ‘Beetlejuice’ was a comedy, a ghost story, a high-camp horror film, and a macabre fun house ride, all driven by a new kind of palm-buzzer freak-show prankishness.” The article also talks about Tim Burton as a director and how the creation of Beetlejuice helped skyrocket his career. Owen Gleiberman from Variety magazine also says the following. “You might say ‘Beetlejuice’ was a vibe. The vision of the afterlife as a waiting room of max-museum horrors; the moment when those shrimp leaped off the plate in the spectacular ‘Day-O’ musical demonic-possession sequence; and Michael Keaton’s feral, jabbering, Croucho-Marx-meets-oozing-derelict performance as Beetlejuice the grotty bio-exorcist – the movie channeled a spirit that wasn’t just loopy, it was hilariously insane.” The last article, written by Kyle Buchanan at The New York Times, talks about how the movie came to be. He talks about just how difficult it was to get the actors on a video call, let alone sign on to the movie. Kyle Buchanan says “Tim Burton joined from the south of France, where he was editing the second season of the Netflix series ‘Wednesday’ while Winona Ryder signed on from Atlanta, on a brief break from filming the last season of ‘Stranger Things.” Michael Keaton spent the call roaming a cabin he’d built in rural Montana- “I’m reheating coffee if you want some,” he told the group- while Catherine O’Hara, the last to sign on, did so from her cottage in Ontario, Canada.”
