Grandparents Day is celebrated on September 8th, 2024, and it’s a special day for honoring grandparents and the important role they play in our lives. In many schools, this day is marked by inviting grandparents to visit the school and participate in various activities with their grandkids.
Mrs. Jacoby, teacher at BCES, shared when she was a kid, “it was the highlight of my day, and Grandparents Day was the best day ever.” Mrs. Jacoby also explains, “We host Grandparents Day at BCES just to make the kids here feel special and happy and to spend a day with their grandparents.” Mrs. Norton added, “I didn’t have grandparents come in elementary school for me, but if they did, it would have made my day and made me feel special.” She goes on to say “We host Grandparents Day at BCES for family involvement and to make memories with their grandkids.”
Schools might decorate classrooms with banners and artwork made by the students. Grandparents can join in on classroom activities, like storytelling sessions where they share their experiences, or they might read books to the class. Some schools organize special assemblies where students perform songs, skits, or dances dedicated to their grandparents. These performances are usually very touching and show how much the kids appreciate their grandparents.
Another common activity is a “Grandparents’ Tea” or a similar event where grandparents and grandchildren can enjoy snacks and drinks together. This gives them a chance to talk and bond in a relaxed setting. Schools might also set up craft stations where grandparents and grandkids can work on projects together.
At home, families often celebrate by spending time together, whether it’s going out for a meal, visiting a park, or just enjoying each other’s company. It’s a day to reflect on the love and support grandparents provide and to show them how much they mean to us. When we showcase this same love for grandparents throughout the schools, we show how important and critical they are to our community and our students.
Darcie, who is a kindergartener at Bourbon Central Elementary School, said she felt really happy when she saw her grandparents and enjoyed coloring with them. Another kindergartener named Jack said, “I was happy and excited to see my grandparents walk in”, he also colored and spent half the day with his grandparents, even eating with them in the cafeteria. Kindergartener Lettiallen and her 3rd grader sister Edien spent half the day with their grandparents and ate in the cafeteria too. Brody and Avery said “it was the best day of our life because we were so happy and when we saw them we were excited to draw with them.” Shepherd and his twin brother Deacon were really, really happy and spent time talking and hanging out with his grandparents. Then, they ate and did some reading with their grandparents.
Overall, Grandparents Day is about creating special memories and showing appreciation for the grandparents in our lives. Thank you to all Grandparents in the district.
