On September 15th, 2024, this year’s Emmy Awards took place. This social event had many different attendees, such as Jennifer Aniston, Carol Burnett, Sofia Vergara, Meryl Streep, Tyler James Williams, and more.
An article written by Kalhan Rosenblatt at NBC, listed the people who were both nominated and who won Emmys. Some of the people listed were Anna Sawai, who won Outstanding Lead Actress in a Drama Series in ‘Shōgun’, Greg Berlanti, who won the Governors award, and Richard Gadd, who won best writing for a limited series or TV’s and movies for the show ‘Baby Reindeer.” Along with these winners, there were many different categories and even more who were nominated. For best writing for a drama series, was won by Will Smith who wrote ‘Slow Horses’, people such as Peter Morgan and Meriel Sheibani-Clare from ‘The Crown’ and Francesca Sloane and Donald Glover from ‘Mr. and Mrs. Smith’ were nominated, but didn’t win the title. Another category was writing a comedy series, which was won by Lucia Aniello, Paul W. Downs, and Jen Statsky for ‘Hacks’ with nominees such as Quinta Brunson from ‘Abbott Elementary’ and Joanna Calo and Christopher Storer from ‘The Bear’
In another article, written by Linda Holmes at WWFM, she talks about five different takeaways from the Emmys. One of the takeaways she talks about is how popular ‘Shōgun’ was. The show is an American historical fiction taking place in 1600’s Japan and won a total of 18 Emmys, winning 14 at the Creative Arts ceremony and another 4 on Sunday, September 15th, making it the biggest winner this year by far. Another takeaway Linda writes about is how the last Emmy Awards just took place earlier this year in January. One of the reasons why this happened is because of the actors’ and writers’ strikes. She says viewers might feel a little weird about this years Emmy’s because the previous Emmy Awards took place less than a year ago, and it still feels like it just took place. One last takeaway talks about the Netflix series, Baby Reindeer, which is currently in the middle of a lawsuit from the woman who inspired the stalker, Martha, played by Jessica Gunning. Although it’s in the middle of a lawsuit, it didn’t stop the viewers from giving Richard Gadd three different opportunities to speak about Baby Reindeer, and he used these opportunities to talk about how the show didn’t have established intellectual property or established actors and actresses and it still became a hit.
In one last article, written by the Emmy Awards, it talks about how someone would win an Emmy and the history behind the Emmys. It was first started by Syd Cassyd, the founder, and Edgar Bergen, the first president, in 1946 to help industry professionals develop the art and science of television. Each year, there are nearly 22,000 voting members within 31 peer groups that each represent television industry professions. Next, it talks about the way that the design of the award came to be. In the design of the award, the atom and its electrons that it’s holding represent the science and technology of television, the Emmy and her wings represent the muse of art, and her molding process takes a total of five hours due to her being molded and coated in copper, nickel, silver, and gold. The next thing it talks about is the process of winning an Emmy. First, a show, movie, or actor must be submitted to win an Emmy. Next, the voting takes place, where the voters determine the nominees by voting for the entries that they feel exemplify excellence in their categories. These categories include program, performer, and individual achievement. The process behind voting is that the nominations-round ballots are tallied, Ernst & Young LLP accountants check the ballots, and on July 17th, the Emmy nominees are announced to the public. The third step is the final round voting. Here, Emmy voters can pick their favorites in the program categories and the non-program categories in which their peer group can vote. You might be wondering, what do they judge? They judge the performers’ individual achievements and the programs. The last step is announcing the winners. In this final part of the voting process, the final-round ballots are tallied, Ernst & Young LLP accountants check the ballots, and the winners names are the only people who know who won until the ceremony are Ernst and Young LLP.
