On Wednesday, October 9th, my Pepaw and I went to Rural King to purchase a gun safe for my uncle’s birthday. When my Pepaw asked for a veteran discount, the employee told him that the corporation didn’t offer discounts for veterans, police workers, etc. When I tried to contact the corporate office, they transferred me from person to person. Unfortunately, I am still awaiting a response from them.
I found it odd that Rural King doesn’t provide discounts for those who protect the country. The military and police have done so much to keep the country safe. Why wouldn’t a family-owned company support these individuals? It could appear to onlookers that Rural King is a corporation that doesn’t appreciate the military’s role in keeping us safe from danger. Knowing some stores do not provide a veteran or Hero discount makes me angry given the fact that a lot of veterans live on disability. Disability doesn’t pay that much. My dad lived on disability. A disability check may only pay $800 a month, and nowadays, that is not enough to pay bills and pay for groceries, nonetheless any other items an individual may want or need.
In 2001, the website Wesulute started the first national veteran’s discounts. Some of the stores that offer veteran discounts are
- Lowe’s
- The Home Depot
- Target
- Kohl’s
- Costco
- Dollar General
- Epoch Eyewear
- King Kong Apparel
- MILITARY
- DEVIL-DOG Dungarees
Veterans should shop at these stores and take advantage of the Veterans’ discounts mainly because if on disability, they may not receive enough money from the government to even survive. $800 a month is not enough to survive in this economy, which is why having a 20% discount helps a lot. This is my personal opinion, but teachers should also receive a discount, but they often don’t, and it’s sad because they work hard without asking for anything in return.
