One of the year’s biggest events occurring every single year is the Super Bowl. Fans each year await to see if their teams will make the playoffs to play in the big game. However, what was so different about the Super Bowl this year? Was there a surprise in the teams selected? No, the surprise was the Apple halftime selection that exceeded many expectations with Hip Hop artist, Kendrick Lamar performing along with singer and songwriter Sza. The halftime show had over 133.5 million viewers this year, making it the most viewed halftime show ever with an increase of 3% since Usher’s performance last year. Lamar and Sza had recently released many songs including “30 for 30”, “Luther”, and “All the Stars”. In addition to having Sza as his special guest, Kendrick also had actor Samuel L. Jackson, dressed as Uncle Sam, appear many times throughout his performance. We also see Serena Williams doing a dance to one of his songs. All guests intentional actors in his performance.
Conveniently, all the performers had a past with Hip Hop artist, Drake. If you have been following the Drake and Kendrick debacle, you would know that recently Kendrick and Drake had a fallout, where Kendrick released “Not Like Us”, which was a song dissing Drake. This song has won 5 Grammys.
During the show, Kendrick Lamar had to work around some of his songs due to not wanting to get sued by Drake. During the performance of the song “Not Like Us,” he didn’t care and looked directly at the camera when he said his lyrics, “Say, Drake,” which was him continuing to diss the singer. While Kendrick was dissing Drake and performing one of his biggest shows, Drake was on his tour, so we have yet to hear his opinion on this, but hopefully, we will soon.
