On April 4th, the movie “A Minecraft Movie” was released. After only two weeks of being in theaters, the movie has reached more than $550 million when it was estimated to only reach around $300 million.
An article written by The Associated Press at NBC News talks about how the movie surpassed its original goal of $300 million and is continuing to draw in an audience. The movie stars Jack Black as Steve and Jason Momoa as Garret Garrison as well as other actors such as Danielle Brooks, Sebastian Eugene Hanson, Emma Meyers, and Jennifer Coolidge. Although the movie only got a 46% on Rotten Tomatoes, other websites such as Fandango gave it a 87% and IMDb gave the movie a 6/10. None of that week’s new releases even came close to reaching the popularity of the movie. Movies such as “The King of King’s” by Angel Studios or “The Ametuer” by Walt Disney Co’s even came close to A Minecraft movie although they did surpass their expectations. A Minecraft Movie is loosely based on a children’s story book written by Charles Dickens and has a voice cast of several people such as Uma Thurman, Oscar Issac, and Kenneth Branagh. The movie originally had a budget of around $150 million and was a co-production with Warner Brothers and Legendary Entertainment and, for right now, this has helped reinvigorate theaters after a dismal start to the year. The overall ticket sales were double that of the same weekend in 2024.
Another article written by Gabrielle Rockson at People Magazine talks more about how the movie is doing and the plot of the movie. Just like the last article said, the movie has done very well in theaters and is still the #1 movie since its release. Although the movie hit a 50% decline after its first week, it is still the highest grossing movie of the year and has a domestic gross of around $281 million. On top of this, A Minecraft Movie beat the highest rated video game inspired movie, The Super Mario Bros. Movie. The movie is about a group of people who are pulled into the game and into the “overworld” by a mysterious portal. The group has to become masters of the land on a magical quest with an unexpected crafter, Steve, in order to get home. The movie also includes several musical moments such as Steve singing about lava chicken and songs from the original game such as Pigstep or Comforting Memories.
One last article, written by Marlene Lenthang at NBC News, talks about a recent trend happening in theaters all over the country, people dumping their popcorn or spilling their drinks in the theater. During a scene where Jason Momoa has to fight a chicken jockey, which is a baby zombie riding a chicken, in a wrestling ring, fans have been heard screaming “chicken jockey,” cheering, dumping their popcorn, and jumping out of their seats. This has even resulted in a few young boys being escorted out of the theaters. This trend has gotten so popular that a theater in New Jersey has banned children from seeing the movie without an adult present. The reason the theater believes that the children participating in these acts is because they are unaccompanied by adults. On Facebook, the theater said “If your son was at Township Theater last night, we strongly encourage you to have a conversation with him about his behavior. Thank you for helping us maintain a safe, respectful, and enjoyable environment for all of our guests.” In another theater in Whitley, London posted a warning that moviegoers will be kicked out without a refund if they disturb the film’s screening. The theater told BBC “To make sure everyone has a blast, we ask that all cinema-goers respect cinema eiquitte. For fans wanting to whoop, yell and clap their way through the block-busting adventure, we have created special Chicken Jockey 4DX screenings at Cineworld cinemas nationwide.”
