Brokeback Mountain, Premiering in 2005, directed by Ang Lee, is a film that redefined the representation of same sex love in movies. The film takes place in the irregular terrain of Wyoming in the 1960s, The film follows two young men, Jack Twist, played by Jake Gyllenhaal, and Ennis Del Mar, played by Heath Ledger. The two men who built a deep emotional and physical bond with each other while working together on Brokeback Mountain. What seemed to be a one-time thing on the mountain turns into a decades-long secret affair between the men, where they struggle with themselves about their lives and emotions.
The two men’s relationship was real, strong, and genuine, but due to the era that they lived in at the time, their relationship wouldn’t be accepted by others around them. What came of that is they are going their separate ways, married women, having children, and trying to live lives that they are somewhat satisfied with. Although neither of them can ever truly let go of the connection that they shared. Over the years, Jack and Ennis continued to meet in secret after Jack reached out after so many years, their bonds only grew stronger on their “fishing trips,” even as keeping their true feelings a secret put an emotional ache on their lives.
Heath Ledger’s performance as Ennis is somewhat destructive. Ennis is a man having trouble with his feelings and what he believes is acceptable to society. When he is having a conflict with himself he makes it very obvious due to every expression. Jake Gyllenhaal’s Jack twist is a complete opposite to Ennis, he is more willing to take risks for his emotions, which makes his gruesome fate even more gut-wrenching. Their working together made their performances seem genuine and made a deeply emotional story.
