Trump’s Actions to Fight COVID-19
September 5, 2020
During this whole pandemic, people have looked to what the nation is doing to help control the spread of the virus and to help protect the country. People have looked to what the military and first responders are doing to help as well. But people aren’t looking at what our President Donald Trump is doing to help protect our country. President Trump has helped our country in more ways than one since he declared a pandemic. President Trump has issued proclamations, helped to look out for businesses and workers, and is leading an aggressive, whole, government approach.
Trump issued a proclamation under section 212(f) of the Immigration and Nationality Act to reduce and restrict travel to and from the United States. This proclamation only applies to people not goods or cargo which doesn’t affect the trade market. The restriction applies to most foreign nationals who have been in countries in Europe with open border agreements. American citizens are exempt from the restrictions of the proclamation but are being directed to a limited number of airports where they can be screened. The proclamation was put into place because there is extensive travel between Europe and the United States and the proclamation will reduce the heightened risks of COVID-19.
Trump is constantly ensuring that American businesses and workers are cared for and protected. He announced an economic assistance package that would support businesses and workers harmed from the outbreak. Trump instructed the Small Business Administration to provide loans to businesses affected by the coronavirus. These loans will help businesses overcome disruptions caused. The President also called for Congress to increase funding for the program by adding an additional $50 billion. President Trump instructed the Department of Treasury to defer tax payments for certain people and businesses who were negatively impacted by the virus. This will provide the economy with about $200 billion of additional liquidity. Trump called on Congress to pass payroll tax relief. And he also announced that he will be taking emergency action to provide financial relief to workers who are ill, quarantined, or caring for others due to COVID-19.
President Trump is leading an aggressive, whole government approach. He has taken countless, unprecedented steps to help ensure the health of the American population. He has leveraged all resources to respond to the outbreak which brought together government and private industries. In January he declared a public health emergency. He took early action to help curb the spread of the virus from other countries to the U.S. which allowed important time for response and preparation. The President has also directed his administration to make face masks available to all healthcare workers. This, in turn made the Administration help make millions of respirators available to healthcare workers. He has signed into law more than $8 billion to fund response efforts. The Administration has also closely worked with the CDC to try to develop therapeutics and vaccines to prevent the spread of the coronavirus. Trump has been working across public and private sectors to make testing readily available. So far millions of tests have been distributed nationwide and testing is now available in every state lab. Trump has also worked closely with the CDC to release guidance on how to keep businesses, schools, community gathering places, and families safe. And from the very beginning, he has strived to keep the American people informed about the virus, making the knowledge of the spread widely available and making the health of American citizens a top priority.
All in all President Trump has put America first during the pandemic. Many people have blamed him for the coronavirus but he has done so much to help prevent the spread and to help protect all Americans from the virus. Some other things Trump has done are halt student loan payments for some, worked with the CDC to make drugs available to see what will help with the symptoms of the coronavirus, sent hospital ships to Seattle and New York City to provide aid to the local hospitals, mobilized the National Guard to help control situations in California and other large cities, and much more. As the situation continues citizens can expect Trump to continue efforts to help.
