The KHSAA Board of Control had its 3rd regularly scheduled meeting on November 18th, 2020. The Board of Control decided that it would be best if they delayed or postponed the winter sports season until January 4th, 2021. Kentucky’s Governor Andy Beshear’s most recent mandate had ordered that practices halt between Friday, November 20th and Monday, December 14th.”Including basketball, bowling, competitive cheer, dance, indoor track and field, swimming, and wrestling” said KHSAA Commissioner Julian Tackett, “Our board has remained steadfast in their supports for the spring sports and sport-activities in 2021 and continues to attempt during these challenging times to ensure these athletes, coaches, and schools have a full and complete season with an appropriate culminating event.” According to KHSAA organization website, The KHSAA Sweet 16 Tournament will be in March for both the boys and girls teams at Rupp Arena.

On Thursday, December 10th, the KHSAA board of control called for an unscheduled special meeting on zoom. During the meeting, the board voted to keep the practice start date on Monday, December 14th, and various games could start the week of Monday, January 4th. The votes were 12 for and 5 against. The board also voted to push back the dates for the boys’ and girls’ Sweet 16 in Rupp Arena. The high school winter season is set to start on January 4th.

With this, teams will be practicing, while still under social distancing guidelines, but will bring a new sense of normalcy and excitement, as sports have proven to be a great outlet for stress during these times. Pushing back the dates may seem like a damper on the season, but it might actually create even more excitement for the upcoming season. Looking forward to the new year and exciting thing to come, just around the corner. We can give the teams some support at their games, as well.
