Remembering Of The Holocaust
March 12, 2021
Holocaust survivor Elie Wiesel quotes, “I decided to devote my life to telling the story because I felt that having survived I owe something to the dead and anyone who does not remember betrays them again.” Millions of Jewish survivors were killed and tortured on Wednesday, January 27th. We need to honor and remember The Jewish people who survived or were involved in the Holocaust because we must understand what the victims of the Holocaust had to go through. They had to make choiceless decisions, they were powerless but still kept fighting through the pain. Elie Wiesel, A Holocaust survivor, had to say goodbye to his mother and little sister not knowing it would be the last goodbye. He was moved into a different camp where he and his father had to work in a warehouse. Eliezer’s father ends up passing, when he awakens his father’s body is gone. A few months pass by and the camp is liberated, his first act as a free man was to eat like crazy but that’s when he ended up getting food poisoning which causes him to almost die after he is rushed to the hospital. When he’s released from the hospital, he looks in the mirror and sees a corpse, he says he has never forgotten the look in his eyes that day.
A man who had much hate towards the Jewish people was named, Adolf Hitler, The leader of the Nazis, who forced the Jewish survivors to leave their homes and to be put into Concentration Camps. The Jews were forced to sleep on wooden bunks on top of each other which were not in stable condition, some even had to sleep on the floor. There were heaters that were meant to keep the Jewish survivors warm but they didn’t help much due to how cold temperatures were. Families were separated and many of the Jews were forced to work and do hard labor. The Jewish holocaust survivors were tormented and beaten by the Nazis, which caused them to have severe injuries.
So why is it important to remember the Holocaust? Not many survived that day but the ones who did will never forget what happened during that horrible time. People like Elie Wiesel will still continue to share their stories. Now, many of us will not experience the horrible things that happened that day. The Jewish survivors fought for their lives and some died even trying to do that. Remembering what happened that day will make everyone feel something that will completely change our lives. Today we hope no one will ever have to experience the pain the Jews did. The Jews deserve remembrance and many of us can only show empathy towards the events that happened during The Holocaust.
