The Slander of Meena The Elephant
February 19, 2022
People aren’t joking when they say they’ll do anything that others will. As you may know, “Sing 2” came out in theaters on December 22, 2021. Around that time, “Spiderman: No Way Home” also came out in theaters. Many fans went to see these movies since they were sequels. Though it was expected that the Spiderman film franchise would make more at the box office, “Sing 2” actually did. Making approximately $9.2 million at the box office, “Sing 2” was one of the most popular movies viewed.
I watched it and honestly loved everything about it. The movie itself was so much better than the first one. “Sing 2” also made its way to TikTok. Many TikTok users began to criticize one character in particular because of the way she acted—a character known as Meena—as she attempted to make it big on Broadway.
Meena is an elephant that appears in both “Sing” and “Sing 2.” During the first movie, a person called her out in a video showing how it was her grandpa’s birthday, and she tried to take the spotlight by oversinging. The caption read, “It’s literally your grandpa’s birthday, so be quiet and stop making it about yourself, you pick me elephant.” The video has gotten over 16 million views.
Many other people started calling her out as well. People stated she was a “pick me girl.” A “pick me” is a person who “begs for attention and approval.”
People started bashing Meena for “trying” to steal her grandpa’s spotlight. Videos of her trying to get attention only caused her bashing to grow in popularity. One user commented under a TikTok bashing her, “I hope whoever plays her doesn’t see this.” Played by Tori Kelly, Meena is one of the most disliked animated characters of all time, and the negativity surrounding her character still continues.
