May 3, 2022
“Friendships bloom quickly, but could there be something more?”
This quote comes from the new teen drama, “Heartstoppers,” on Netflix. Originally, Heartstopper was a graphic novel written by Alice Oseman. The first volume was released in 2018. Oseman is a popular author, with her most famous books being “Radio Silence” and “Loveless.” The television rights for Heartstopper were purchased by the company See-Saw Films in 2019. Netflix then acquired distribution rights in 2021, and filming began.
The show’s title lives up to its name, “Heartstopper,” due to its representation of the LGBTQ+ community. The show was released on Netflix on April 22, 2022. The series has 8 episodes for its first season, and following the release of the show, many fans are wanting a second season. The author of the graphic novel has already teased a second season.
The show’s main characters are Charlie Spring and Nick Nelson. The synopsis for the show was listed as: “Teens Charlie and Nick discover their unlikely friendship might be something more as they navigate school and young love.” Heartstopper is a British coming-of-age series as it covers topics such as sexual assault, mental disorders, the LGBTQ+ community, homophobia, and transphobia. In the media, the reviews for the series have been positive, with a rating of 9.1/10 on IMDb and a 100% rating on Rotten Tomatoes.
Additionally, popular news platforms such as The Guardian have stated that “Heartstopper” may be the loveliest show on TV. Throughout different social media platforms, people who identify themselves with the LGBTQ+ community have expressed that the heart-wrenching show has helped them with their identity and helped them accept themselves or even come out. Individuals felt like the show was relatable due to the topics that it covered.
The graphic novel originally had three official volumes. With the rising success and popularity of the novel and the show, another volume or season is highly likely.
