Review of season three of the Netflix series “Never Have I Ever”
August 24, 2022
The new season of the Netflix series “Never Have I Ever” has recently been released on August 12, 2022. All of the NHIE fans are excited to see Devi’s chaotic life play out once again. Bevi and Daxton fans are arguing over who is better. But as a whole all fans are excited to hear narrator, John Macenro, and his comments on Devi’s life once again. This new season closed a lot of books and began to prepare all fans for the inevitable end to Never Have I Ever.
The main question I had before watching the new season was is the plot just going to be the never ending question “Ben or Paxton?”. But surprisingly that question is slowly coming to cease. The writers of the show were trying to make the viewers slow, but surely, okay with Paxton fading out of Devi’s life. In the final episode as Devi watched Paxton give a speech basically about her and how she changed his life and she felt different than the usual reaction when the “perfect” hunk of a man, Paxton, would acknowledge her. The narrator is confused as he says, “Devi, why isn’t your stomach in knots?” showing that Paxton is fading out of her life and she’s okay with that. She even gives herself closure with Paxton by saying, “ You kind of got me through the death of my Dad… by being a dream.”. They even had Paxton go to Arizona State University, showing he is onto a new path of his own. So sadly that’s it for you Daxton lovers, the burning flame Devi has felt for Paxton for years is finally going out. I think the writers did a wonderful job at giving Devi, Paxton, and the audience closure and making the viewers okay with losing Paxton.
But this creates the other burning question, will she end up with Ben? Well at the end of season three Devi’s narrator says, “But there was maybe one part of the old dream that still interested her, and per Dr. Ryan, she was about to surprise herself”. She then rushed to Ben’s house and handed him the “free boink” card he gave her earlier and they are seen going in to kiss as Ben closes the door. Though I think it was smart of them to conclude season three like this because the excitement and anticipation are going to be built up for the final season (season four) it also is obvious that they’re just going to rip them apart again because we all know it is never that easy for Devi.
Before watching this season I also wanted to know if Devi would finally mature, or would she continue to hurt people in her life and be essentially a human tornado. But surprisingly Devi has finally started to mature and make better life decisions. Even when popular girls were making nasty assumptions about why Paxton would want her, though she did get worked up, she eventually decided that they don’t matter, “ Right then Devi learned a valuable lesson. She was nothing to these girls. So maybe what they said should mean nothing to her.”. Throughout the season, especially after Paxton breaks up with her saying, “ I don’t think we can have a real relationship until you like yourself.”, Devi starts to love who she is no matter what people say. Even when her boyfriend’s mom judges her she defends herself and so does Nalini, which also helps her finally feel accepted and valid as a person.
Lastly, before watching the new season I was worried about the show running too long, and the interesting plot that the show has maintained would die out. But gladly the writers have started to slowly prepare viewers for the conclusion of the show. Paxton is leaving for college, Devi is maturing, and relationships are either being strengthened or let go. I think one last season (season four) will be a perfect way to conclude Never Have I ever.
Overall, the new season three of the Netflix series “Never Have I ever” was very well written. It has brought many means to an end and has started to perfectly conclude the show.
