The Trickiest Treat of All
October 27, 2022
The love for Halloween candy has been around since the nineteenth century. Jelly beans, Licorice, Candy Corn, and even Conversation Hearts filled the bags of children dressed up as ghouls, black cats, and witches. The tradition has continued for hundreds of years, and has risen in popularity. The famous candies surround stores across the world, and sell out rather quickly, though this year things are looking different. The rise in inflation is causing pricing of candies to rise 13.1% creating a low demand for the most important thing that makes up the holiday. In a report from Statistica, it read that Americans will spend 3.1 billion on Halloween candy in 2022. Compared to previous years, shelves are not being restocked due to the fact less and less people are buying. The reason for high prices: WAR
With the war continuing on in Ukraine, ingredients for popular candies such as Snickers, Toffee, and Butterfingers have not been able to make their way to the states due to the chaos. Shipping being more expensive, and increasing costs of sugar has created a problem for everyone around the world hunting for cheap candy. There is no telling when the Ukraine war will end, but as far as officials say, it won’t be anytime soon which means prices will continue to rise and a huge mass of supplies will be lost.
Besides the price of candy, decorations and costumes are also at an all time high. It doesn’t look like prices are lowering anytime soon which makes the upcoming holiday even more spookier.
Questioning the amount of money you’re about to spend on candy that’ll last you a night?
- split it up with neighbors (instead of spending more, split the price and candy)
- make your own treats (flavorful, delicious candy can easily be made at home, and for a cheaper price -just don’t be one of those people who passes out healthy snacks.
- go out on Halloween and spend time with friends and family – then you don’t have to worry about spending money.
