‘Tis the Season for Family

Cane Ridge Elementary School celebrates Grandparents Day with decorations and donuts!

Alexandria Daniel, Administrator

Bourbon County Schools celebrated Grandparents Day during September this year. The Bourbon County Preschool provided grandparents the opportunity to interact with their grandchildren in learning centers and on the playground. Grandparents were also involved in several special activities; making handprints of their grandchild to attach to a poem, grandparent interviews were conducted by their preschooler, and a special collage created by the grandparents and children together that said, “I love you to pieces”. Alongside the Preschool, North Middletown Elementary School invited grandparents to have lunch with their grandchildren at the school.

When considering how the education system has been impacted over the past few years due to the pandemic, according to librarian, Sara Meeks, from Cane Ridge Elementary School, “It [Grandparents Day] hadn’t happened in three years due to Covid, so the school was thrilled to be able to host this event.” Hosted by the Cane Ridge Elementary School’s PTO, Grandparents Day was split up into three days. Kindergarten and 5th grade grandparents visited Tuesday, September 6th; 1st grade and 4th grade visited Wednesday, September 7th; and 2nd and 3rd grade grandparents visited Thursday, September 8th. During this time, grandparents and CRES students were treated to a delicious Frank’s donut, a photo booth, activity table, and conversation. Mrs. Meeks also provided visitors with an opportunity to donate a book to the library in honor of the grandchild–209 books were donated! Mrs. Meeks was blown away by the visitors’ generosity. Over 600 grandparents were able to visit Cane Ridge Elementary School. Students definitely felt the love. Cane Ridge would like to give a shout out to all PTO volunteers, and a special thank you to Sarah Jarvis, Sandy Gossett, and Alyssa Ralls.

Writer, Alex Haley states, “Nobody can do for little children what grandparents do. Grandparents sort of sprinkle stardust over the lives of little children.” During this time of the year in the hustle and bustle of the holiday season, we want to express our gratitude for those who mean the world to us.
