“You will lie for a lie but you won’t lie for the truth.”

Glass Onion: A Knives Out Mystery is the 2022 sequel to the 2019 mystery/crime film, “Knives Out.” The synopsis for the anticipated murder mystery follows “World-famous detective Benoit Blanc heads to Greece to peel back the layers of a mystery surrounding a tech billionaire and his eclectic crew of friends.” The film stars famous English actor Daniel Craig as the detective, Benoit Blanc. He was the only person from the original Knives Out film to reprise their role in the sequel. Many fans of the original were anticipating seeing their favorite actors in the next installment, but director Rian Johnson stated that the sequel will have a completely different narrative. An article was released on December 23, 2022, that discussed why the following film wasn’t just titled, “Knives Out 2.” Johnson explained that he was inspired by a  1968 Beatles song. To reference this, “Glass Onion” was played during the end credits of the film. He explained to Reuters that the song was about a mystery that’s not a mystery. Johnson also included that he wanted to use the word “glass” to describe that the mystery was hidden in plain sight

Spoiler Alert! All of Miles’ friends show up via invitation to the private island. Helen (Janelle Monae) shows up and tells Miles the truth. He ruined her sister Andi’s reputation. He does this through lawsuits, forgery, lying, and eventually murder. Helen and Andi were twins so when she arrived on the island, everyone just assumed it was Andi; except for Miles. This unfortunately led to Duke’s (Dave Bautistia) death by Miles’ hand. He desperately did this to stop the truth being revealed that Andi was dead the whole time and Miles was the killer. At first, it isn’t clear that Miles killed Duke, it was an assumed choking. Shortly after, the lights go out and “Andi” is killed. So Blanc now states, “I can peel back layers, but only one person can tell us who killed Cassandra Brand.” Now there are multiple suspects in Duke and Andi and Helen’s killing. Everyone had a motive of some sort but they just had to figure out who. After everyone’s favorite finger-pointing game, Helen walks into the room which shocked everyone since they all did watch her die. This is when Helen reveals the truth to Miles’ eclectic friends. This resulted in the Glass Onions’ destruction. The story ended with Miles realizing he lost the war between the Brand sisters. There are more details and secrets which show how detailed the mystery is in the film. Glass Onion: A Knives Out Mystery was released on September 10, 2022.

The next question movie critics have is, does this film do the mystery genre justice? On the Rotten Tomatoes website, the movie received a rating of 93%. Critics were very pleased with the film’s outcome, it had a wildly entertaining mystery that was rounded out by an outstanding ensemble cast. But was it as good as the original? Another news site, Vulture, wrote an article saying how “Glass Onion is bigger and better than the original Knives Out.” But was it too much? Others say the original will always be better but this second installment introduced a new kind of murder mystery. After it’s popular feedback throughout the media, fan’s are already thinking of ideas of a new mystery for the third installment.
