Local Town Tries to Prevent Owning a Pet for Sake of Protection
January 12, 2023
The residents that live in a Colorado mountain town are struggling to find mountain lions that have killed over a dozen dogs. These mountain lions have killed their dogs over the last two months, which is terrifying because that means that these mountain lions are around these residents’ houses often, and on a daily basis. This is really dangerous since you would not be aware if you will run into them one day. Mountain lions get aggressive when it comes to their hunting. They run 50 mph which means that you will not be able to get away from a mountain lion because they will catch up to you and eat you.
Wildlife officials have been getting calls and reports over these mountain lions killing their pets since November 1st, 2022. McClatchy News previously reported, “In early December, pet owners were desperate for help after nine of their dogs disappeared and were killed.” The Wildlife officials have had several meetings and have given tips to these people on what they can do to help prevent these mountain lions from taking their pets.
Even though these residents used those tips that the wildlife officials gave them, the attacks continued to occur. Pet owners have put track collars on their dogs to see where and when attacks are happening. The last time they have seen an incident was when a mountain lion tried to snatch a dog off of a porch, and one who ended up killing three dogs despite the owner trying to defend them. “Dogs disappearing from the same area are getting out of control,” residents say.
On December 3rd a mountain lion attacked a 100-pound Doberman and took the dog over the fence at night, the Post said. The Mountain lions have been duplicating over the months and the situations have gotten worse. The residents have made an agreement of not having dogs anymore so that way the mountain lions have no reason to come back. Daily routines cant be continued on until something is done about these murderous lions.
