Icy Weather Taking A Toll
February 9, 2023
Icy road conditions caused multiple crashes on Friday, January 27th, 2023. All of these wrecks led to several interstate/ road closures throughout Central Kentucky. The Lexington Police Department attended to 75 non-injury collisions, 12 injury collisions, and 21 hazards between midnight and 11 A.M. When officers arrived at these scenes, they said that there were sheets of ice on the road making it impossible for them to get close to the people that needed their help. Eventually, they were able to proceed with caution.
One road that was covered with sheets of ice was I-64 near mile marker 74. On I-75 the traffic slowed down astronomically through Fayette County and Scott County. To prevent collisions, they shut down a lot of roads that had layers of ice on them. One road that they shut down was Leestown rd because it was icy and slick. All of the area of Leestown and Yarnallton was not opened back up until Friday noon.
Around 10 A.M on Friday, the roadway on I-75 at mile marker 113 the exit of Paris, was down to one lane with traffic at slow pace because police were still working on two semis that went off the road. At around 1PM traffic reopened on I-75 and Man O’ War Blvd after the ice had already melted a bit. At around 2PM in the afternoon on Friday, there was a five-vehicle wreck involving three semis on I-75 near the southern split causing vehicles backed up and a lot of traffic for several hours. Something else that did not help these terrible conditions was that it was really windy–flowing from around 30 to 40 mph. Consequently, the wind does not help the occasion because it will make the temperature drop and get colder making the ice and snow even harder to dry up.
Drive safe out there, if you do not have a reason to leave your house, do not leave your house, or be very careful while on the road.
